Do Different Watch Strap Materials Require Different Care And Maintenance?

When it comes to different types of straps, you will need to give them some care and maintenance at some point, but does this differ between different types of strap? The truth is yes, but not really.

You can care for most straps the same way. Some types you may need to be a little more careful with, but in general, you will care and maintain them all in the same way.

All Watch Straps Will Need Cleaned At Some Point

When it comes to care and maintenance, you will need to do something to every strap at some point.  Just wearing a strap a lot will cause it to pick up general wear and tear and dust and grime.

The only way to really keep a strap in pristine condition is to not wear it, which makes owning it pretty pointless and even then, it can still collect dust.

I would say how you clean a strap is going to depend on what type it is, and some may be able to be cleaned more easily than others.

You Shouldn’t Need To Care For Your Straps Too Much

While you will need to do some maintenance at some point, the reality is that watch straps are pretty care free. You are not going to have to be constantly doing things to them.

The biggest “maintenance” technique you can do to keep your strap in good condition is to just take your watch off every now and again and let it breath. Really this just means take it off when you go to bed. This sound silly, but it does make a difference, often we get sweaty and this will allow things to dry up and cool down.

Apart from that you won’t need to do much unless you do some activity that gets your strap really dirty and it obviously needs cleaned right away. Most straps can go a good few years before they need a light clean, especially if you are just wearing it at the office for example.

Watch straps really are easy to care for, so don’t get too worried about looking after them.

Some Straps Can Wear Out Faster Than Others

I think it is important to remember that watch straps are made from different materials and some of these are more robust than others and really this means that you are going to see signs of wear a lot faster on some types of straps than others.

Of course the quality of the strap plays its part, but regardless you will some materials will wear out faster than others. A leather strap is always going to wear out faster than a metal bracelet.

It doesn’t matter how much care or maintenance you give your strap, some will just not last as long.

Cheaper Straps Wear Out Faster

I have already kind of touched on this, but the quality does matter and usually the cheaper a strap is, the lower the quality will be.

This is probably a better measurement for comparing similar straps, rather than those of different materials. A cheap leather strap will usually be a lower quality than an expensive leather strap and you will find the cheaper one wears out faster.

If you try and compare different things, the results may not be the same, a cheap, low quality metal strap will probably still out last a high quality, expensive leather strap, it’s just the nature of the two materials, one is a lot more durable than the other.

Different Straps Can Handle Water Differently

The biggest and probably the most important difference between straps is their ability to handle water.

This is of course going to affect how you clean the strap, as you don’t want to damage things. Most straps are waterproof, so you can get them as wet as you want and this means you can submerge them in water and actually give them a good clean and scrub any dirt off.

The main exception to this is going to be any sort of leather strap. This will not be able to handle water at all, so you will need to clean this very differently. You are going to have to use a lightly dampened cloth and carefully wipe it down and make sure it is dry afterwards.

Ultrasonic Cleaners

You can use also use an ultrasonic cleaner for your straps, although this is usually reserved for metal bracelets. The ultrasonic will basically vibrate the dirt off without irritating or scratching the surface of the strap.

I have never seen anyone place a nylon or rubber strap into an ultrasonic. I am not sure why. My guess is that you can get better results just hand washing these type of straps in some warm soapy water.

I also think this is because metal straps are made from separate links, and the dirt can hide in between these and you are not going to get a cloth in there, where as an ultrasonic cleaner will easily shake all that free and actually clean the whole thing better than you can.

Scratching Can Be A Problem

As I just mentioned, cleaning a strap with a cloth could cause some scratching, this is very unlikely with most materials, but you should still be careful.

The biggest issue is going to be with metal bracelets or even metal buckles, especially polished ones as these can easily pick up scratches.

You can still clean these with warm water and a cloth, but make sure it is not a rough cloth. This is also probably why these are usually washed in an ultrasonic cleaner. An ultrasonic cleaner will not scratch the surface and it will get into all the small cervices too, so it is often the better option.

Dust/Lint Can Be A Problem

Probably the biggest problem you will face with any strap is just the collection of dust and lint. This can be especially true with rubber or plastic straps, the dust just seems very drawn to them and depending on the colour, this can be very obvious and unslightly.

Usually a quick wipe with a dry polishing cloth will get rid of the bulk of the problem. However, a lot of these types of straps have grooves as part of their design, where dust can easily settle into. This can be harder to get out, but you can usually get rid of it with a damp cloth.

Conclusion

Hopefully now you can see that most straps can be cared for in the same way. Really you only need to be careful with leather straps around water, everything else can be washed without issue and the reality is that this doesn’t need to be done very often.

Most straps do not need much attention, you can just wear them and very occasionally they need wiped with a cloth to remove any dust or dirt to freshen them up.
