If you are new to collecting watches it can seem very disorientating trying to work out where to even start. There are so many brands and styles of watches at so many different price points that it can quickly become overwhelming.
Homages can be a good place to start due to their affordability and ease of access. They also look great and you can really use them to start to learn about what you like and you can start to figure out what direction you want to take your collection.
So let’s look at how homages can help a new watch collector.
Homage’s Will Scratch The Itch Of Wanting To Collect Watches
When you are new to watch collecting you will have an incredible itch to buy a lot of watches, you will want to buy anything and everything.
This is especially true if you haven’t bought your first watch yet, or if you only have one or two. A lot of people get it into their head that they need many watches to have a “collection” but I think the real issue is that new collectors are just excited and want to get hands on with as many watches as they can.
There is also the itch of wanting some high end pieces. I think a lot of new collectors end up with a list of grail watches, rather than just one.
The countless youtube videos reviewing all sorts of watches don’t help with this. I remember myself having a new grail watch almost daily. Every time I watched a new video I was always like “I need this in my collection”.
Homage’s can help with this and you can pick up a few relatively easily and cheaply and let that itch settle down a bit and let that initial excitement calm down.
I know I ended up buying a lot of cheap watches pretty close together as this itch was strong for me and homages did help with this problem.

They Are An Easy Way To Build A Little Collection Quickly
Homages are also an easy way to build a nice little collection. You don’t have to stretch too far to end up with a couple of watches and build yourself ad decent collection.
This carries on from the above point that new collectors have an itch to build a collection and homages are going to allow you to quickly and easily make this happen.

Homage Watches Have A Low Cost Of Entry
Homages are also very affordable, which is perfect for a new watch collector.
No one wants to get into a new hobby and have to start spending a lot of money. A lot of people just want to dip their toes in and see how they like it before really committing. Watch collecting really is something that can get financially out of control very quickly and homage’s help curb this.
Some luxury watches can cost thousands and this is pretty daunting for a lot of new collectors, especially when they realise that some of the really high end watches are pretty much the same price as a house.
This can really put people off getting into watches and they assume it is just something they can’t have, but homages solve this problem and make them accesable to all.

Homage’s Are An Easy Way To Try Different Styles Of Watches
A large part of being a new collector is trying to work out what you like.
It can be easy to be dazzled by everything and just want every watch you see and to be honest, you kind of need to go through this phase to actually work out what you like and what just works with your wrist and your style.
The more watches you can try on, the more you will start to get a feel for what you actually like. However, the reality is that you really need to spend time with watches to really be sure. You can try a watch on and think it’s great, but until you wear it for a few weeks you won’t be 100% sure.
Homages will help with this and this is due to their low cost (which I discussed above). You can buy a number of different styles, sizes or colours of watches and see how they work with you.
After owning a couple of homages you will start to get a feel of what you prefer.
You Can Learn A Lot From Homage’s
Homages are often seen as a cheap rip off of high end watches, and while that can be true at times I don’t think we should dismiss them entirely, you can actually learn a lot from homages.
I have generally found that homages have opened my eyes to a lot of different things and I end up deep diving into different styles of watches and trying to learn more about the originals.
Looking at homages and seeing how they are not quite at the level you want can really make you appreciate the original watches even more. You can really study the minute details and seeing something as simple as a pair of hands just looking a little too small on the dial can really make you appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into the original watch, where there is not the same issue.
I have also learned if I like the style of watch or not and it can help me decide if I should start saving for a grail watch, or maybe keep searching for something else.
I Think Homage Watches Are Great For New Collectors While They Get Into Things
My general vibe with homages is that they are great for new collectors.
Deciding what and how you want to collect can be a little foggy at the start and just getting hands on with some watches can really help clear up what you want to do.
The reality is that a lot of people will move away from homages, and that is okay. You don’t need to stick with them forever. Many people use them as a sort of stepping stone, or even training ground where they can figure a lot of stuff out and then go from there.
Watch collecting should be fun and the low cost of homages can help with this and you are going to learn a lot about what you want to collect from having some of these watches early on in your collecting journey.
There Are Plenty Of Affordable Brands You Can Try Too
While homages are a great place to start, they are not the only place. There are plenty of very affordable brands that you can get in to, that are using original designs.
Casio is of course one of the most well known brands in this area, but if you want to get into the more mechanical side of things then Seiko is great option. Many collectors start here and can get a lot of the same benefits as buying homages.
Another great brand is Vostok, their style is maybe a little more like marmite, you either love them or hate them …but if you like the look of these unique Russian watches then they can be a great place to start your watch collection.

Conclusion
As you can see homages can be a great place for new watch collectors to focus their energy while they work out what they like and what they actually want to have in their collection.
However, it’s not just for new collectors, it doesn’t matter how long you have been collecting watches for, a homage can be a great addition to your collection and bring you a lot of joy and they are of course they are very affordable.
Basically, everyone should have a few homages in their collection, they can be great watches.
