Are There Any Special Features Or Functions In Casio Watches That Set Them Apart From Other Brands?

When we think of Casio watches, we usually think about affordable digital watches that are jam packed with functions.

However, are the functions you find in a Casio unique …not really, but that doesn’t mean this does not set them apart from other brands.

When you look at the whole package that Casio watches offer, they often outshine their competitors and the multiple functions they offer do play a role in this.

Digital Watches Have More Functions Than Mechanical Watches

In general, a digital watch is going to have a lot more functions than an analogue watch, especially a mechanical watch.

Mechanical and analogue watches can still have functions, but usually it is just one or two. This is simply because to make these work you need all sorts of gears and cogs and its pretty complex.

It is far easier to have these types of things on a little computer chip, so just generally a digital watch is always going to be able to have more functions than other types of watches.

I am also sure you know, the vast majority of Casio’s are digital watches, so you will find that broadly speaking, Casio watches will have more functions than a lot of other brands, simply because they specialise in digital watches.

Casio Make Digi-Analogue Combination Watches

As I just mentioned, analogue watches tend to have less functions as they are more complex to create …so Casio gets around this by have digi-analogue watches, which is basically a combination of the two.

The watch face looks like an analogue watch from far away, but when you get a little close you will see the dial has a digital display as well, meaning you get the best of both worlds and these types of Casio watches will have a lot more functions than the average analogue watch from other brands.

G Shocks Tend To Have More Functions

When we look at Casio’s, you will find that their G-shock banded watches have more functions. These are the more expensive watches, so it makes sense that they are the ones that offer the most functions.

This doesn’t mean that a standard Casio should be ignored, these still have a lot of functions and while they are more basic functions, they are still the ones people want the most and actually find useful, such a stopwatch or an alarm.

The G-shocks tend to have the very niche functions, such tide phases as well as just generally more of the basic functions.

When you compare G-shocks to other brands, the functions they have to offer are a lot more unique and this can really set them apart from the other brands.

No Watch Has All The Functions

I think it is also important to say that while there is a seemingly endless amount of functions available in watches … no watch has them all.

You can certainly find watches with a lot of functions, especially Casio’s, but you will not find one that has everything.

I guess this is partly because it might be very difficult to actually produce a watch that can display all the functions …but I also think it’s largely to do with the fact that if they made this one mega watch, it would kind of make all the other watches redundant.

Why would you want to buy anything else, it would just be subpar compared to the super function watch that has it all.

What Functions Do Casio Offer?

I will go through some of the functions that you can find on a lot of Casios, some are pretty basic, but they are still functions and they are all very useful in their own way. These are also found in a lot of other brands, so they are quite generic and not specific to Casio.

Back Light

If a Casio has a digital screen, it is going to have a back light. Not all models have the best lighting, but even the terrible ones will let you see well enough to see the time in the dark.

The analogue watches will usually have a little bit of lume, which is nothing special, but some models actually have a backlight too, which can really light up the hands.

12 or 24hr Time Reading

This is a very basic function, but very useful. This will of course only be on the digital displays, but you can change the time to either be read in 12 or 24 hours and you can pick what one you prefer.

Date Function

The date function is also very simple, but it is great to know what date it is.

Of course I only ever need this function when I am wearing a watch that doesn’t have the date on it, but such is life.

Day Function

The day function is always good to have with the date. I generally find this more useful than the date, as I don’t really worry too much about the date …but I do like to know what day it is, which can often escape me as I am self employed and all my days are pretty similar … so thanks to Casio for letting me know what day it is.

Stopwatch

Stopwatches are of course going to be perfect if you need to time anything and are pretty common on Casio’s. I often use this if I am going on a walk, just to track how long I am out and about for.

Timer

Not every model of Casio will have a timer, but if you have one, you will find it extremely useful.

I use my timer pretty much daily to time my rest times in between sets when exercising, but they can be really useful for cooking too.

You can just set them to whatever length of time you need and then the watch will start beeping once the time is up.

Alarms

A lot of Casio’s will have an alarm function where you can of course set the time to have the watch go off.  It will just start beeping when it goes off. I am not sure if you could use this to wake you up in the morning but it could be useful.

Some models actually have multiple alarms, which can be pretty useful if you have to do something at different times of the day, like take medicine, it would be a very easy way to remind you.

World Timer

The world timer function is very cool and very useful if you have people you talk to across the world, or you travel a lot.

The world timer allows you to quickly check the time in other time zones and is basically a GMT, but of course in a digital format.

Multiband 6

Multiband 6 is a very cool function that Casio offers. This is where the watch will connect to the signal of the Atomic clock and it allows the watch to sync up with the atomic time, making your watch extremely accurate.

Solar Charging

Solar charging is also a function that you can find on some Casio’s, which simply means that the dial will have a little solar panel on it, allowing the battery to stay charged and can mean your watch basically lasts indefinitely.

You will need to change the battery eventually, but it will generally last much longer than the average battery.

Some Casio Models Contain Extra Functions

Everything I have covered so far is fairly generic and you can find in a lot of Casio’s and other brands, but they also have a lot more specific functions that can be quite niche and very useful to those who want them.

You can still find these functions on watches from other brands, but they are maybe a little less common.

Calculator

I am sure you all know the iconic Casio calculator, which is pretty much a wrist sized calculator that is also a watch.

This is pretty much a novelty, but it works and people love it and it is one of Casio’s most popular watches.

Other brands do offer this, but they are basically copying Casio on this one. You also need to remember that Casio started out making actual calculators, so it’s no surprise that when they started making watches they decided to try and merge both.

Moon Phase

The moon phase is a function you will often see on very high end mechanical watches. This just allows you to see the cycle of the moon and it can be found on Casio’s too.

I can’t remember seeing this in a digital format, but I have seen it on one of their analogue watches which is pretty cool …and of course it will cost a lot less than something from Patek Phillipe or Audemars Piguet.

Tide Phase

If you are into anything to do with the sea then this is a pretty cool function to have. Some models of G-shock will show a little bar graph, where it shows you the low or high tide, so you can quickly glance down and see what the nearby sea is doing.

I haven’t seen these in other watches, but imagine it is available elsewhere too

Sun Rise/Set

Usually the models that offer the Tidal information, also offer the sunrise and sun set times too, which is going to be pretty helpful information for a lot of people, especially those who are doing things with the sea.

The G-shocks that feature these are aimed at surfers, but they could actually be useful for wide variety of people.

Temperature

Some models of G-shock have a build in thermometer which is pretty cool. This can allow to always know the temperature.

However, some of these only really work when you have them off your writs. The heat from your arm can affect the reading, so it’s not exactly ideal if you have to take it off to see what the real temperature is.

Compass

Some Casio’s come with a built in Compass. This is usually in a digital format. You hold the watch up and point it in whatever direction and it will say “220° NE” or whatever the direction is.

Altimeter

An altimeter is a device that tells you your altitude, and this can be found in some Casio’s.

This is usually paired with the compass I mentioned above and the watch is aimed at hikers, so they can tell how far up a mountain they have climbed and be able to tell how high up they are.

As I am writing this …I wonder if anyone tried to use this function on a plane. I think the cabin pressure may affect it, but I’d still like to see what happens.

Heart Rate Reader

When you think of heart rate trackers, you usually think fitness trackers and smart watches, but this function has now found its way into Casio’s.

Step Tracker

A step tracker is another function that you usually associate with fitness trackers, but this has also found its way into some Casio’s.

It seems that Casio have realised that fitness trackers and smart watches are now very popular and they want their piece of that pie, however, these devices are now really advanced and the Casio’s do not really compete with them in this area.

Bluetooth

Casio has recently started introducing Bluetooth to some of its models, which allow you to sync your watch to your phone.

This can allow you to upload the health data, such as the heart rate and step tracker, but it also does other more basic functions like updates the time on your watch from your phone clock, which is of course updated online, so it’s extremely accurate.

Some models will also push notifications for your phone to your watch, so you know you have a message or whatever, but really this not that advanced compared to what a smart watch can do in regards to that.

Vibration

Some models of Casio will have a vibrate function. These usually vibrate at the same time as the alarm and a lot of the models that have this, will be linked to Bluetooth, and will vibrate when you get a notification, as I mentioned above.

Do Other Brands Offer These Functions?

When we look at other watch brands, you will see they do also offer a lot of these functions too. I don’t believe any of them are unique to just Casio.

However, when you look at the digital watch market, I would say that Casio dominates this and a lot of the watches you see on offer are often just cheap imitations of Casio, so while they may look similar and have the same functions, I wouldn’t trust them. I would always say the quality and reliability of Casio can’t be beaten.

Of course a lot of the functions I’ve mentioned above are going to be more commonly found in brands that sell digital watches, but some functions can be found in mechanical watches too, some of these watches may be of a higher quality, such a luxury watches, but usually the number of features you find on these watches will not match how many Casio can offer on their digital watches.

Conclusion

As you can see there are a lot of functions that are available on a Casio watch, but are they unique to Casio …probably not, but I would still say that on average you get more for your money when you buy a Casio than any other watch.

Part of that is due the functions they offer, but it is just the general quality of their watches that set them apart from other brands, then when you pair that when the affordability, Casio’s are the easy choice when compared to any other brand.
