When it comes to formal occasions, we usually have to get dressed up and put on a fancy suit or dress on and make a bit of an effort.
The watch we wear can also be a part of this, and this does lead to the question around Casio’s, and if they can be worn to a formal event.
It can seem like there are all sorts of unwritten rules about what is acceptable or not when it comes to dressing formally, and while some of these can be helpful, they are only really guidelines. If you want to wear your Casio watch, you can.
What Is A Formal Watch?
When we think of a watch that you would wear at formal event, we are usually talking about a dress watch.
These are generally seen as quite elegant and understated in their design. They will be pretty small watches, and also quite slim, meaning they can easily slip under your cuff and not have much attention drawn to them.
It is seen as rude to be looking down at your watch, as it implies you are bored and want to know how much longer you have to be there, before you can leave. This is often why dress watches try to not draw attention to themselves.
They are also quite refined and the dial will be very minimal. They are normally very simple watches that have no complications and can also often only have 2 hands, although you will find plenty of dress watches that do have seconds hands.
Dress watches are usually found on a thin leather strap, which usually compliments the rest of the outfit and helps tie everything together.
They can work really well with more formal clothing and help tie your whole outfit together.
Are Casio’s Formal?
When you look at how I described a dress watch above, and then compare it with the average Casio …the two do not match up.
The average Casio is the total opposite of dress watch. They are not elegant or classy and are more rugged and bulky.
The resin cases, digital display and dials covered in text are not exactly understated. Some Casio’s can be loud and even bright coloured, they certainly draw attention to themselves.
Some Analogue Casio’s Can Look Dressy
When we think of an average Casio, we usually imagine one of the digital watches …but Casio also sell a lot of analogue watches and some of these can look a little dressy.
There are some models that are a little classier than others, their designs are clean and simple and they don’t have the usual Casio design language.
These models are a little harder to find and they always seem to be sold out, but you can find them. Some good examples are:
- MTP-V005GL-7BUDF
- MTP-1302PD-1A1VEF
- MTP1141A7A
While they may not be elegant dress watches, theses models are a lot more formal looking than one of the square shaped digital watches that we usually associate with Casio.
If you took one of these watches and put it on a leather strap, you would be very close to an actual dress watch and they would look pretty smart and formal.
Can You Wear a Casio For Formal Occasions? …You Can If You Want
When it comes to wearing a Casio at a form occasion …can you do it? Well, if you want to. No one is going to stop you and it doesn’t matter if its digital watch, or one of the dressier looking ones, you can wear it if you want to.
I can sit here and tell you all about the “rules” for dressing formally, but at the end of the day they are not actual rules, nothing happens if you “break them”.
I know I have done it in the past, when I only owned one watch, which was a digital Casio and I have seen many others do it too.
If you look at Bill Clinton when he was being sworn in as president for the first time, he was wearing a Timex Ironman …so not a Casio, but a rival budget digital watch that is fairly similar and I think it is safe to say that the inauguration of the president is pretty high on the list of formal occasions.
So really, if you want to wear your Casio when being formal …do it.
People Don’t Care About What Watch You Are Wearing
I think the most important thing to remember is that no one cares. No one cares what watch you have and they don’t care if its mechanical or quartz, digital or analogue and they certainly don’t care if it is a Casio.
I know it is easy for watch collectors to forget about this, since we are so obsessed with watches, but the average person doesn’t care.
People either own a smart watch, or no watch at all and they don’t even know there is a difference between the styles of watches, such as dress watches and tool watches and everything in between, they just know watches can be worn and they tell the time …that’s it.
This means you can turn up to a formal occasion and you will see all sorts of different watches and more importantly, no one is going to be looking at your own wrist and judging you.
Of course you will be looking at every ones wrist and questioning their choices, but you are a fan of watches, so just remember everyone thinks the same way as you about watches.

Conclusion
Hopefully now you can see it doesn’t matter. So long as you are putting in some sort of effort to make yourself look a little more formal than usual, that should be enough.
Not everyone can afford the fancy clothes and not everyone has the fancy dress watches and more importantly … no one cares.
If you want to wear you Casio, just do it. No one will notice and no one will care. It is just a watch and you can wear it if you want.
