If you have started to get into watch collecting you will have probably started to hear about Nato straps and you might be wondering what makes them different from other types of straps.
Basically they are made designed differently to most other straps and are also made from a different material, which all offers a lot of advantages and makes them they quite unique, so let’s go through some of these differences in more detail.
Nato Straps Are Only One Piece Of Material
Probably the most noticeable difference between a Nato strap and all other straps is the fact that they are only one piece of material.
Usually you have two separate parts that attach to either side of the watch and then you buckle these two sides together to make a complete loop around your wrist.
A nato strap is just one long single strap that loops under the watch and then you buckle either end to form the loop. This just means that how the watch is attached to the strap is a little different, which makes things very safe, but I will talk about that in a bit more detail further down.
Nato Straps Are Made From Different Material Compared To Other Straps
Most Nato straps are made from nylon, which is a very durable material that works really well as a watch strap and can be much long lasting compared to some other materials that are used for straps.
Of course you can get other styles of straps that are made from nylon and you can also get Nato straps that are made from other materials, like leather, but in general, when you think of nylon straps …you think of Natos.
Nato Strap Can Be More Colourful
I would say that in general, Nato straps are more colourful than other straps
A lot of straps can be fairly basic and usually are either black, or a few shades of brown, especially leather straps.
Of course you can various other colours, but overall the selection is quite narrow when you look across the range of straps. Nato straps will have these options too, but you will also find that they have a wide range of different colours.
Natos will very often have strips of colour running through them and you can find a seemingly endless amount of different combinations.
When it comes to Natos, you should be able to find a colour that suits your style and your watch, no matter what you like.
Nato Straps Are Easier To Care For Than Other Straps
As Nato straps are so durable, it makes them very easy to care for.
They are less likely to get damaged and are not going to get covered in scratches like a bracelet would.
They are also waterproof and even if you get them covered in dirt and grime they can easily be washed, which isn’t going to be possible with some other types of straps, such as anything leather.

Nato Straps Offer More Protection For Your Watch Compared To Other Straps
As I mentioned near the start, Nato strap are one piece of material and attach a little differently to the watch compared to other straps and this actually means that they offer more protection for your watch.
As the strap is fed under the spring bars, rather than attached to them, it means that if a spring bar breaks, the strap and watch will still remain on the wrist.
Usually the spring bars are the weak point with most straps. If this fails, the strap comes away from your wrist and the watch hits the floor. This can’t happen with a Nato, as it is looped through the spring bars, rather than physically attached to them.
Of course you could argue that both springs bars could fail at the same time, but I think it is very unlikely for this to happen. Usually one will give way and then the watch will just start flapping around on your writs and you can remove it before it gets any worse. The important thing is that the watch did not fall and hit the floor.
This is exactly why these straps are enjoyed by the military. If anything does happen to the spring bars, the watch is still saved and not lost or broken.

Nato Straps Are Easier To Change Than Other Straps
Once you have a Nato strap on your watch it honestly takes about 2 seconds to take it off and swap it with another.
You do not need any tools, you literally just slide it off and slip on the new one. This makes travelling with Nato straps really easy. You can bring a couple of different coloured straps with you and quickly change straps with zero fuss.
Even if you want swap a different strap for a Nato, this is still easy but you will need a tool to get the other strap off, but really it isn’t too much effort.

Nato Straps Can Give A Different Feel To Your Watch
While changing to any strap will give your watch a different look and feel, I think Nato straps do this more than the others.
It can really change the whole wearing experience and give your watch a much more sporty and ready for action feel.
I’m not sure if it’s the colour, material or just general look of Natos, but they really do make a difference and if you are getting a little bit bored of your watch, you just need to stick it on a Nato and it can feel like you have a new watch.
Even switching between Natos can really change the feel of your watch, so all you need to do is buy a few cheap Nato straps and you can have a good range of options to really get the most out of your watch. You will really be ready for any occasion.
Conclusion
Hopefully now you can see that Nato straps are actually really different compared to other watch straps.
They have a lot of unique traits that make them stand out from other straps and if you have not started using them with your own watches, you should get some, they are definitely worth it.
